Lisa's flight was getting into Sydney early this morning (15-October), but mine wasn't getting there until the very early evening. By the time I arrived at the hotel (Rydges World Square) Lisa had been checked in for a few hours. I had warned her not to let herself fall asleep until at least the evening and she listened! Once I arrived, we went and found a place for dinner and then back to the hotel so she could finally get some sleep. On my way to Australia a month or so ago, I did the same ... but it really worked. By the time I woke up the next morning after that first night's sleep, I was pretty much adjusted to Australia time and had no real jetlag.
Lisa & I decided to check with the concierge at the hotel Wednesday morning to see what he suggested as a way to start seeing the city. He suggested the Hop-on/Hop-off bus with an add-on of a small wildlife park, an aquarium, and the wax museum. We said "Why not?", and off we set.
There are two routes to the bus. We started with the blue route called Bondi and Bays Explorer, which winds through and down to Bondi Beach and then back toward the main part of the city (full route about 3 1/2 hours). We exited the bus at Darling Harbour at Aquarium Wharf, where we went to the Wildlife Sydney Zoo. This is right on the wharf, in a building that also houses the wax museum and the aquarium, and we didn't really know what to expect. It ended up being pretty impressive and unexpectedly large (on various levels as it winds its way on a vary curvy path over multiple levels.
It specializes in wildlife native to Australia, and we saw habitats that housed kangaroos, koalas, a wombat, tasmanian devils, butterflies, a cassowary, crocodiles, snakes, and more!
Not half bad for in the heart of one of the two biggest cities in Australia. I say it that way because I know that Sydney was the biggest in 2023 but Melbourne was closing in. We'll see at the end of 2024!
