Perth - Rottnest Island & Quokkas!

Today (Monday, 14-October) was a post-IBD meeting tour to Rottnest Island.

Rottnest Island is just about 19 km offshore from the city of Perth surrounded by the Indian Ocean. It is a protected nature reserve, renowned for being the home of (LOTS of) quokkas. These are a small marsupial. To me they looked a cross between a big rat and a wallaby.

There are also multiple lovely beaches, with Strickland Bay being known for its surf breaks. I decided to do one circuit around the island on the bus before deciding where to explore further. Our small group made it most of the way around, but stopped a couple of kms away from the where the ferry was to have some lunch. One of the party found out what a milkshake is at Rottnest Island ... apparently just some milk with some syrup/flavoring in it. And since this little fellow was wandering around the outdoor table area, signs don't always work!

Just around the end of lunch, it started to rain lightly. I decided to walk back to the ferry (just a couple of kms), and waited for the weather to clear. But it was light rain, so eventually I just started walking. Along the way the rain and wind both ramped up, so the rain - which was almost needle fine, was being blown almost sideways instead of falling. I took shelter under some trees at one point, but it really wasn't that bad, and I made it back in relatively good time. A lot wetter, but not any the worse for wear. As my mother used to say, "You're not sugar, you won't melt!"

Once back to where we would eventually reboard the ferry, I ran into a few other people I know and we all went for a drink in one of the bars on the island. And then back to Perth.

Tonight I will be packing and preparing for my flight to Sydney tomorrow. Lisa is arriving from the US, and we will be checking into the hotel in which the Mensa Australia Annual Meeting will start on Friday.
