I have worn a wristwatch since I was about 10 years old (I think). This, despite the fact that I almost always just know what time it is, at least to within a couple of minutes. So I wear it, but I seldom actually look at it. Add that idiosyncrasy (my brother Dave would have called it an idiotsyncrasy when we were kids) to my weird kinship with numbers and patterns, and you may guess that I never reset my watch to local time when I travel. My eyes may see the hands on the dial - I will only wear an analog watch - but my brain just reads it in local time.
Today, I arrived in GA, meaning that I am back in Eastern Standard Time. So for the first time in about four weeks, my watch is in accord with the actual local time. I don't care either way, but on those occasions when someone else happens to catch a glimpse of the dial, I hope they feel better!
Back to the trip. I spent some time in and around Lake Charles over the time I was there. It's really kind of pretty, especially when the city itself isn't in the foreground. I took a couple of pictures that are below, and I did a fair amount of walking around. The city actually has a kind of nice feeling.
I mentioned in my last post that I hoped to head to New Orleans after I left Lake Charles, for dinner at Commander's Palace - but those hopes were, unfortunately, dashed. There are pluses and minuses to not really planning ahead, and thus not knowing when I might arrive somewhere. In this case, the minuses won out. There were no available reservations for 1 or 2 people for more than a week out from when I would have arrived in the city. Of course, the ambiance of the place is part of what makes it special, but when I do get home I just might order some of their food to be shipped to the house - I was really looking forward to it!
As a result, instead of staying on the most southern route, I decided to head more directly toward Savannah. That lead me to Gulfport, Mississippi yesterday evening. I would report all of the amazing things I did there - but there weren't any. I arrived just in time for a Zoom meeting, then went out and grabbed some dinner, and then went back and worked on a client project and then something to do with accounting for one of my businesses (I know, so boring! But sometimes there are just things that have to be done. Even on a pilgrimage.)
I was on the road by 8:00am this morning, again because of real-world practical demands on my time. I made it as far as Columbus, GA, and found a hotel here as I had two Zoom meetings scheduled for this [late] afternoon and a telephone conversation this evening. But that's it for work, and I decided to stay for two nights. Tomorrow, most of my time can be spent exploring. I haven't spent any time here before, so it will be fun to see what there is to see. Among other things, there is apparently a river walk - although I understand that some of it is closed at the moment. We shall see. The weather is supposed to be pretty nice, so I'm hoping to spend a lot of time outside.
Next stop after this - likely Savannah.
Did you get to do the riverwalk?
